Every community matters.
A worldwide directory should help you find a place and understand how much is known about it. Here is what this edition covers, where it falls short, and how to reuse the data.
What this edition contains
As of 8 November 2026: 2,087 records across 55 countries and territories. This includes 7 primary-source profiles and 2,080 community-mapped records. 1,683 have recorded names; 404 do not. These are directory counts, not national temple population estimates.
We do not claim this is an exhaustive census. Small congregations, newly opened or relocated temples, and places missing from OpenStreetMap can be absent. A pin tagged as Sikh worship may describe a shrine, a shared venue, or a related community institution. Its inclusion does not determine religious affiliation or confirm public access.
Country & territory coverage
How the map records were compiled
We queried OpenStreetMap globally for Sikh religion tags, gurdwara buildings, and places of worship named “gurdwara,” “gurudwara,” or “Sikh temple.” The source snapshot is 2026-11-08T04:52:50Z. From 2,304 candidate objects, 87 were excluded as non-temple features, insufficiently identified locations, conflicting religion tags, or records flagged as disused or under construction. 137 duplicate objects were merged with nearby matching records or primary-source profiles.
Conservative proximity and name matching reduce duplicate map nodes and building outlines. Distinct named places in the same complex are kept separate. Remaining duplicates and tagging mistakes are possible. This snapshot does not include a separate inventory of closed or ruined historical gurdwaras.
Addresses come from map tags where available. When a locality is missing, a nearby GeoNames settlement within 50 km provides a visibly labelled “Near…” estimate. Region labels can also be estimated. Natural Earth boundaries provide approximate country grouping; coastal gaps can be assigned from a GeoNames locality within 20 km. Country and territory labels are for navigation and do not express a position on disputed boundaries.
What “checked” means
Primary sources checked: the profile cites a temple, government, or other primary source. The check date records when the page was consulted, not a visit or telephone call. A current meal schedule needs its own supporting evidence.
Map listing · unverified: a community map record imported on the date shown. The import date does not establish when a venue last operated or when its details were last accurate. We do not turn map opening hours into langar schedules. These preliminary profiles are excluded from search-engine indexing until they have fuller verified information.
Licensed photographs appear where available. A missing photograph stays missing. The daily community update can maintain the primary-source profiles; the global map dataset is a dated snapshot and has not been independently checked venue by venue.

Downloads, attribution & reuse
The combined directory database is offered under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Attribute © OpenStreetMap contributors and The Sikh. Estimated locality data is from GeoNames, licensed under CC BY 4.0. Natural Earth country boundaries are public domain. Photographs and linked website content have their own licences and are not covered by the database licence.
Both CSV and JSON downloads include all records, source links, coordinates, provenance and status fields. They include unverified and unnamed entries. Keep these distinctions and the attribution when reusing the list.
